The Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre (CMCRC) provides thought leadership and break-through technology solutions for finance, capital and health markets. We are Australia's leading research and development organisation in this field.
Finance and health market design
“Our data and scientific research are powering new technologies that help assure market quality.”
CMCRC brings together the best in innovative research and technology with the aim of making a profound difference to the health and capital market domains. The CMCRC provides a bridge between the practical needs of industry partners and the tools developed by academics.
Combined resources for optimal market quality
CMCRC harnesses the combined resources of approximately:
- 40 senior researchers
- 50+ postgraduate students
- 30 full-time professional staff.
They come from the fields of finance, health, engineering, computer science and information systems. Our industry partners provide, similar skilled personnel. Together they work to find solutions that will make a significant difference to the future operations of global health and capital markets.
Since 2001, we have provided a bridge between the practical needs of industry partners seeking to explore their data with tools developed by academics to turn that data into information.
One example is our work (in association with SIRCA and Thomson Reuters) in developing the Thomson Reuters Tick History (TRTH) service. TRTH provides intraday trade, quote and information announcements for every securities market/instrument in the world to both commercial and academic users. This involves handling a data update rate of more than one million messages per second for a database now in excess of 3 Petabytes, to which commercial clients require online access.
Recent research outcomes (include the Market Quality Dashboard) give clients the ability to:
- access and download pre-calculated metrics representing efficiency and fairness
- develop confidential metrics and have them available for download near instantaneously.
The CRC Programme
The CMCRC was formed under the auspices of the Department of Industry and Science’s CRC Programme.
The CRC Programme supports industry-led end-user driven research collaborations to address the major challenges facing Australia. Australia's network of CRCs operate across all sectors of Australia's economy and society.
CMCRC has been successful in attracting key industry and research participants as partners in the programme to foster research that is both leading edge and industry relevant. A measure of its success is that our government and industry funding has:
- doubled to $100m over 7 years in a second round of funding in 2007
- increased by another 50% as of 1 July, 2014 when a third competitive round of funding was secured.
