Andrew Rogers QC (Chairman)

andrew-rogersI was admitted to the New South Wales Bar in 1956. Quite fortuitously and this owed nothing other than to good fortune my first brief was as a very junior junior to a team led by Sir Garfied Barwick appearing in the Privy Council. After that I developed a nice practice as a junior in commercial and constitutional matters in various Courts in Australia, Papua New Guinea with an occasional excursion to London to the Privy Council. In 1973 I took silk. In 1979 I was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in charge of the Commercial List and some years later was appointed the foundation Chief Judge of the Commercial Division which dealt with all commercial disputes as well as matters of corporate governance. I was fortunate enough to sit on a number of high profile commercial matters such as AWA, Alan Bond and other high flyers of the 1980s. As Chief Judge, I was an additional Judge of the Court of Appeal and sat on important matters such as Mareva Injunctions and similar issues of great commercial importance. I retired from the Court in 1993.

Since 1993 I have been an Arbitrator on the panel of most of the major arbitral institutions and have acted as Chairman, Sole Arbitrator and member of Arbitral Tribunals dealing with claims totalling more than $2 billion in various countries in the world. As well I have been sitting as a Mediator in disputes in Australia.

Since 1993 I have been a Consultant at the national law firm Clayton Utz. Between 1995 and 2000 I was Non-Executive Director of the Garvan Medical Research Foundation. Since 1995 I have been a Non-Executive Director and member of the Audit Committee of New South Wales Treasury Corporation.

Since 2000 I have been Probity Advisor to the Leighton Group of Companies. Since 2005 I have been Chairman of Audit Quality Review Board Limited. In the same year I was appointed Deputy Chairman of ILSAC, an organisation established by the Commonwealth Government to promote the export of Australian legal services.

In 1994 I was appointed the Foundation Chancellor of Southern Cross University and in the same year President of the Sydney University Foundation into Securities which subsequently became SIRCA Limited. Since 1995 I have been an Adjunct Professor at University of Technology and until 2006 the Chair of the Law School Advisory Committee at that University. I have been Patron of the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association (NSW Division) since about 1985 and of the Ted Noffs Foundation since the early 1990s.
