ABC Four Corners "Doctoring The Figures"

September 23, 2004

The ABC Four Corners program titled “Doctoring The Figures” went to air on Monday 6 September. The program stated that maintaining our health services costs around $20 billion a year. This is the approximate cost of health services paid through public (Medicare & PBS) and private health insurance in Australia.

The Health Insurance Commission claim the amount of "leakage" is less than 1 per cent. Four Corners reporter Ticky Fullerton interviewed former and existing fraud investigators who claim the figure is up to 10 per cent. The program was illustrated with examples of fraud in Medicare and private health insurance.
