SYDNEY-BASED RESEARCH GROUP SCOOPS NATIONAL RESEARCH AWARD
June 16, 2006
Sydney-based research that has resulted in the world’s
first real-time fraud detection technology has emerged as the
focus for research excellence at one of the nation’s
most important scientific and research events.
The Capital Markets CRC, based in Sydney, has been awarded
one of Australia’s most prestigious research accolades.
The Awards for Excellence in Innovation ceremony was recently
held in Brisbane as part of the national conference for the
Cooperative Research Centres Association (CRCA).
Mr Tony Staley, a former Federal Communications Minister and
now Chair of the CRCA, said that the standard of innovative
research and education being undertaken by Australia’s
70 CRCs is world-class.
The Australian investment community can now benefit from the
world’s first real-time fraud detection technology, developed
by the Capital Markets CRC through adapting leading edge research
in data management, data mining and data visualisation to the
capital markets area.
Given that approximately 70% of Australia’s superannuation
assets are invested in securities markets, the innovation represents
an important step forward in protecting the retirement savings
of Australians. Ultimately this will lead to a reduction in
the cost of capital for Australian business which will in turn
facilitate the funding of more innovation in Australia.
Deployed through the broking community, the product has captured
95% of the Australian broker market in fewer than two years
and has also been launched in New Zealand, Singapore, Hong
Kong, the UK and Canada.
Other research and education programs to receive awards included
the development of disease resistant forage crops, tackling
invasive plants and an interactive biotechnology education
program for students.
